The Summer City Festival is Wellington's summer in the city festival of outdoor fun and entertainment - and with a wide array of events and concerts over three months, there are heaps of reasons to get out and join in the action.
The Summer City programme started on 31 December and runs to mid March. There is something to cater for everyone’s taste, and most of the events are free.

The Summer City festival is jam-packed with sizzling events and concerts for the entire city to enjoy this summer. There is a huge array of music with the ASB Gardens Magic Concert Series from 10-31 January, bringing you the finest in local and national talent to the Sound Shell in the Wellington Botanic Garden - often referred to as the Botanical Gardens. The Dell in the Botanic Garden also hosts a number of events, as does Waitangi Park and Frank Kitts Park.
Chill out with some awesome summer beats at One Love on Waitangi Day, or get caught up in the colourful festivities for the Chinese New Year celebrations. With its festive atmosphere, the Newtown Festival in March will not disappoint either.
There will be plenty of thrilling sporting action on offer, with the party atmosphere of the NZI Sevens at Westpac Stadium, the Pelorus Trust Wellington Round the Bays Fun Run the Wellington Dragon Boat Festival, the Culture Kicks football tournament, Beach Volleyball, the Ocean Swim series, Thundercat Racing and Offshore Powerboat Racing to get the blood pumping. Cricket fans should note there will also be top quality cricket action at the Basin Reserve this summer, with HRV Cup Twenty20 Cricket matches on 6-24 January along with a full schedule of cricket at the Basin Reserve.
A new event this year is the Wellington Festival of Circus, held in Waitangi Park from 3-10 March. There will be plenty of entertainment for the whole family on offer, with a variety of circus shows happening every night and free workshops during the day.
Whatever your tastes, there is something for everyone, and with many events free there is no excuse not to enjoy Wellington this summer. So get up, get out and get dancing with this year's Festival of Fun - Wellington's Summer in the City.
