Wellington Zoo

Wellington Zoo a magical place of learning and fun, leaving visitors with a sense of wonder and respect for nature, and a belief in the need for a sustainable co-existence between wildlife and people.

Wellington Zoo is the home to New Zealand’s native treasures and endangered exotic animals. Get up close and personal with wildlife including an extraordinary range of native birds and reptiles.

The Nest – Te Kōhanga
Newly opened, it's Wellington Zoo's animal hospital and centre for native wildlife, the largest and most ambitious project in Wellington Zoo’s history. The $6 million facility is helping to improve the lives of animals here at the Zoo, around Wellington and beyond. Each of the facility’s main surgical rooms features a viewing gallery, offering you a unique first-hand glimpse of the veterinary team delivering first-class animal care using state-of-the-art equipment. Find out more.

Unwrap the Nest
Unwrap The Nest family open day is on Monday 25 January. There's lots of fascinating and fun activities planned to celebrate the opening of The Nest. Bring in you favourite animal toy for a check-up, special behind-the-scenes guided tours, amazing live animal procedures that will take your breath away. From 11 - 2pm. Free with general Zoo admission.

Meet Tahi the one-legged kiwi
Visitors to Wellington Zoo now have the opportunity to see a kiwi up close. At 1.15 daily, Tahi the one-legged kiwi will be in the Wild Theatre with a Zoo guide to answer your questions. Tahi is a great advocate for his species—he lost his leg after it was caught in a hunting trap in the bush an despite best efforts vets were unable to save it, so his leg was amputated just below the knee joint.

Close Encounters
Looking for a truly unique animal experience? Then roll up your sleeves and prepare to meet some of Wellington Zoo’s most vivacious, loveable and quirky creatures. Close Encounters bring animals and people together—choose from a Big Cat, Cheetah, Red Panda or Giraffe Close Encounter. During your encounter Zoo keepers will tell you about the animal’s personality, history and place in the world.

10 per cent of all proceeds from Close Encounters go towards conservation projects administered through the Wellington Zoo Conservation Fund. You can book your Close Encounter online, by phone on 04 389 3692, or email zooevents@wellingtonzoo.com for more information.

Zoo Sleepovers
Spend a wild night at Wellington Zoo and wake up to the call of the gibbons and roar of the lions. This special after-hours animal adventure is ideal for school and youth groups—our guests love to bunk down for the night after supper and a special behind the scenes tour. Groups enjoy another tour in the morning before the Zoo is open when the animals are waking up for the day.
